Diablo 4's mercenary system gives you a Primary companion (always active) and a Reinforcement (triggered by a condition you choose). How the Mercenary System Works
You carry two mercenaries at once:
- Primary Mercenary — Follows you in solo play. Has access to a full skill tree with active and passive abilities. You can customize their loadout at The Den or the Mercenary menu.
- Reinforcement Mercenary — Does not follow you. Appears for a single skill when an Opportunity Condition triggers. You pick the skill and the trigger (e.g., "when you use a Core Skill," "when you are Injured," "when you are Crowd Controlled").
Both mercenaries build Rapport as you fight alongside them. Rapport has 10 ranks per mercenary. Each rank unlocks skill points and access to the Barter vendor at The Den. After Rank 10, excess Rapport converts into Pale Marks — a currency you spend at Fayira's barter shop for Legendary gear, boss-summoning materials, and Masterworking caches.
Tip: Level all four mercenaries to Rank 10 before you settle on a main pair. The barter rewards and Pale Mark income are account-wide and stack fast once you max everyone out.
Raheir — The Shieldbearer
Role: Tank, damage mitigation, emergency saves
Raheir draws aggro, soaks damage, and keeps you alive during spike situations. He's the most popular Reinforcement pick across all classes because his Bastion skill — a 5-second bubble that redirects 90% of incoming damage to himself and grants you 1 second of Unstoppable — can save a run when a boss hits phase 2.

Signature Perk: Valiance
If any single hit deals 15% or more of your current Life, Raheir intercepts the damage, knocks nearby enemies down, and grants you Unstoppable for 0.5 seconds. 30-second cooldown. This activates automatically — you do not need to use him as your Primary for it to work.
Skill Tree Paths
Raheir's tree splits into two branches: Tower Shield (crowd control and taunting) and Round Shield (direct player protection). Massacre Meter Explained
The meter builds as you and Varyana score kills. The Movement Speed bonuses stack with your existing movement stats, but the 7-second reset timer means Varyana punishes you if you stop to loot or idle between packs. She's built for chain-pulling dungeons, not careful single-target encounters.
Bloodthirst's +30% Attack Speed and 7 seconds of Unstoppable is a significant cooldown — it lets melee builds push into dangerous packs without getting chain-stunned. The +200% Movement Speed burst during Bloodthirst is the fastest repositioning tool any mercenary offers.
Passive: Bloodlust

Forget the demon form for most practical setups. Field of Languish at Rapport Rank III is Aldkin's best tool: a 6-second zone that Slows enemies by 40%, cuts their damage by 20%, and — with the Paranoia passive — lets you deal 15% more damage to everything inside. The Condemned passive (instant kill below 40% Life on non-Elites) accelerates trash clear in Nightmare Dungeons and Pandemonium Ruptures.
If your build already has Vulnerable uptime from gear or skills, Aldkin's Curse of Darkness overlaps. In that case, skip the demon form path and invest in Field of Languish upgrades.
When to Use Aldkin
Two scenarios:
- Reinforcement for damage amplification: Set Field of Languish to trigger "when you use a Core Skill." Every pack you engage gets debuffed for 6 seconds. Subo as Reinforcement (Wire Trap on Core Skill) adds CC on top of your freezes. Rapport: Level All Four, Then Specialize
You earn Rapport by fighting alongside a mercenary. Each rank unlocks skill points and passive perks. At Rank 5 and Rank 8, you unlock additional barter tiers at Fayira's shop in The Den. At Rank 10, you receive a Grand Mercenary Cache and start earning 100 Pale Marks per Rapport cycle.
Pale Marks buy Legendary gear with Greater Ancestral affixes, Masterworking caches, boss-summoning materials, and aspect caches. The vendor refreshes once free per day; each additional refresh costs 50 Pale Marks.
Strategy: Rotate all four mercenaries as your Primary until each hits Rank 10. This takes roughly 15-20 hours of active play. Once everyone is maxed, settle on your preferred pairing and collect Pale Marks passively from both your Primary and Reinforcement.
Claim Rapport rewards manually — open the Mercenaries tab (Shift+M on PC), select each mercenary, and collect from the Rapport tab. The game does not auto-collect Pale Marks.
Season 14 Mercenary Interactions
Season of Death Awakening (Patch 3.1.0) did not rework the mercenary system, but two seasonal mechanics interact with your merc setup:
- Pandemonium Ruptures: Subo's minimap reveal marks Risen Monsters and the ritual circle boundaries, making him the best Primary for engaging Ruptures. Varyana's Massacre Meter stacks fast during the escalating kill phases.
- Mythic Uniques: The new Mythic upgrade system increases unique item power by 30%. Builds that previously sat one tier below mercenary independence (e.g., Sorcerers that could barely survive without Raheir) may now find enough survivability through Mythic items to swap to a more offensive mercenary pairing. Test your toughness after converting key Uniques to Mythic before committing to a merc swap.
Common Mistakes
- Running Aldkin Primary on a build that needs every point of resource. Curse of Flames drains your resource pool during demon form. If you're already managing Mana or Essence tightly, Aldkin's damage amp doesn't offset the DPS loss from empty resource bars.
- Ignoring Reinforcement entirely. Some players never configure a Reinforcement because they forget or don't visit The Den. A Raheir Reinforcement with Bastion on Injured takes 30 seconds to set up and will save multiple Hardcore characters.
- Picking Varyana for boss fights. The Massacre Meter can't stack against a single target. Varyana adds nothing during a 2-minute Pit boss encounter. If you're pushing boss content, swap to a Subo or Raheir Primary before the fight.
- Not claiming Pale Marks. Rapport rewards past Rank 10 require manual collection. Open the Mercenary tab and check both slots regularly.

Do mercenaries work in multiplayer?
Primary mercenaries do not appear in multiplayer groups. Reinforcement triggers still activate. Plan your Reinforcement as if it's your only merc in group content.
Can I respec mercenary skill trees?
Yes, free of charge, at any time through the Mercenary menu. Swap builds between farming and pushing without penalty.
Does Raheir's Valiance perk work when he's my Reinforcement?
Valiance is a passive perk tied to your Rapport rank with Raheir, not his deployment slot. It activates regardless of whether Raheir is your Primary or Reinforcement, as long as you have the perk unlocked.
Which mercenary should I unlock first?
Raheir unlocks automatically during the Vessel of Hatred campaign. After that, unlock Subo through the "A Feather on the Scale" priority quest at The Den — his minimap reveal speeds up every other unlock and farming task. Varyana and Aldkin can wait until you've settled on a build direction.
Are there mercenary changes expected in Season 14 hotfixes?
